The People of Carmine Falls

Core Families

The Montgomerys

The moral backbone of the city, the Montgomerys have resided in this corner of the world since before it was a state. The Montgomery name has long been linked to the legal tradition of Carmine Falls, and this tradition continues today. Clayton Montgomery, the patriarch of this proud clan, is the senior partner in Montgomery, Montgomery, Montgomery, and Darcy. He shares this honor with his old friend Sid Darcy and his son Trey. The other Montgomery in the firm's title is not Clayton's daughter Annette, who runs Carmine Falls only modeling agency, but his deceased son Jeremiah, whose sudden loss Clayton still mourns. When he isn't battling his questions about Jeremiah's death, Clayton spends his days happily trading banter with his sister Nan, laughing with his two youngest children Clay and Julia, and watching his grandaughter Gwyneth grow into a sweet young lady, so much like her father was. His second wife, Serena, can hardly believe her good fortune. She arrived in Carmine Falls as a pregnant teenager, sent to live with her grandparents. Now, twenty-five years after her shameful arrival, she is the doyenne of Carmine Falls society. If only her daughter Tiffany would accept her place in the Montgomery family, Serena's happiness would be complete. But Tiffany rejects the Montgomerys and instead indentifies with Serena's little brother, roguish horse dealer Brock Watts. When she is not reaching out to Tiffany or planning Women's Service Society meetings, Serena carefully guards Clayton's health. Their enduring twenty year marriage was unmarred until Jeremiah's death, and she is determined to keep Clayton's recent heart trouble from once again bringing tragedy to the Montgomery estate.

The Sidaruses

The Sidaruses, the ultra-wealthy owners of Sidarus Enterprises, are relative newcomers to Carmine Falls. William Sidarus settled here during the Great Depression, and built his antiquities business from scratch. Unfortunately, the U.S. government believed that William was dealing in more than medieval tapestries and Faberge eggs. He was convicted of treason in 1967 by then young federal prosecutor Clayton Montgomery. Convinced that his father's conviction and subsequent execution were products of zenophobia and an overzealous prosecutor, Luc Sidarus built Sidarus Enterprises into the multi-million dollar business it is today, and determined to use his power to bring down Clayton Montgomery at all costs. Even before he amassed his current fortune, Luc attacked Clayton at his most vulnerable spot by seducing Clayton's first wife Anna. Anna divorced Clayton, hoping to wed her true love, Luc. However, after the divorce, Luc wed docile Maria Kovlos, a childhood friend. Anna left Carmine Falls for the distractions of New York City, but she never forgot Luc. Thirty years later, she returned to Carmine Falls following Maria's death to breast cancer. Luc and Anna wed almost immediately, on August 20, 2000, but all was not blissful in the Sidarus world. Luc's children by Maria, twins Viola and Ren and teenage Miranda, want no part of Anna. Anna has had some luck winning over the sweet-hearted Rosa, Luc's adopted daughter. As for Luc, he spends little time worrying about the dynamics between his children and his bride. He is determined that Clayton will soon feel the full force of his vengeance and understand the Bard's immortal words, "When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions."

The Bevinses

Carmine Falls is a seemingly quiet town, not known as a political hotbed (although Trey Montgomery wishes to change that). For the past fourteen years, this quiet town has been run by a quiet man, Oliver Bevins, the patriarch of the respectable Bevins family. At nineteen, Oliver married his high-school sweetheart, popular Meredith Hasting, the daughter of Carmine Falls favorite minister. Oliver and Meredith built a happy life together. They earned a stable income as the owners of an independent grocery, and Meredith climbed the ranks of Carmine Falls' philanthropic societies. Following Oliver's election to mayor, Meredith achieved the ultimate honor and was named president of the Women's Service Society. She proudly led the WSS for three terms as president, but her reign was toppled by Serena Montgomery. Meredith consoles herself with other activities, most notably her "Mind Your Manners" column, which appears every Wednesday in the Carmine Falls Gazette. The birth of their first grandchild, Zach, has brought great joy to Oliver and Meredith, although they wish that Zach's father, their son Hasting, would resign from the police force and take up safer work, like assisting his wife Kara with her organic grocery, Healthy Falls. Meredith is much happier with her son Seth, who is the captain of Carmine Falls High's soccer team, and the winner of last year's Gadgets-and-Gizmos science competition. Meredith is also pleased that her younger brother Aron has recently reformed. After a wild youth which included a torrid romance with Viola Sidarus, Aron renewed his faith and became an Episcopal minister. He recently returned to St. George's here in Carmine Falls. All is right in the Bevins household, except for the painful memories of Oliver's older sister, who disappeared many years ago.
